Was she Jewish..?

I can't remember specifically where I received this information (I think I was reading about Religious founders).. but I have in mind that Mohammed said he was a descendant of Abraham (him being the father of the tribe of Judah).. I have read that Mohammed (most of Gods Prophets being Jewish) was Jewish, as his mother belonged to a Jewish tribe.. I have tried to research this, but cannot get a lot of information..

can anyone shed more light on this?

OK no-one seems to know much or anything about this aspect of Mohammed's matriarchal lineage..

I have tried to get some more info (in vain).. and have found out that Mohammed's mother, Amina, might have been a Jewess who might have converted to Christianity

this is something I am very curious about and will help solidify how I view Islam, it would be great if anyone can help confirm or refute any of what I have found..

Quote:
“Mohammed, who was the only son of Abdallah, a Pagan, and Amina, a Jewess, and was descended from the noble but impoverished family of Hashim, of the priestly tribe of Koreish, who were the chiefs and keepers of the national sanctuary of the Kaaba, and pretended to trace their origin to Ismael, the son of Abraham and Hagar, was born at Mecca, August 20, A.D. 570 ...”
It was mentioned in Alzog’s Universal Church History, ©1902, volume 2, page 192

Quote:
“Amina was of Jewish birth. Von Hammer,
Geschichte der Assass. p. 10 ...”

Quote:
and Seven hundred years before the death of Mahomet the Jews were settled in Arabia; and a far greater multitude was expelled from the Holy Land in the wars of Titus and Hadrian. The industrious exiles aspired to liberty and power: they erected synagogues in the cities, and castles in the wilderness; and their Gentile converts were confounded with the children of Israel [Jews] ...”
The History Of The Decline And Fall Of The Roman Empire by Edward Gibbon, volume 5, page 202

Sallam,

I've read a couple biographies and I’ve never heard this mentioned. The only place I can find it is on Evangelical Christian sources. That try and play up the fact that his mother was Jewish when I don't think there is any evidence of this, just speculation.

It's worth noting that Mohammed (pbuh) left his mother at the age of 6 and was raised by relatives.

wa salaam

Thanks Andalus - there is a lot of info about the biography of Mohammed, but not enough about his roots.. I think that is something which is significant.. like you had stated - I can't get hold of any Islamic source which goes into much depth about Mohammed's mother.. I think one would have to think about the different tribes and which faith they had.. that might be a way of establishing Mohammed's roots.
