A DIABETIC patient has been "cured" for the first time in the UK using a groundbreaking cell transplant procedure.
The 61-year-old no longer requires insulin injections after islet cells were injected in his liver. The cells, taken from the pancreases of dead donors, develop their own blood supply and start producing insulin. Past transplants only reduced the amount of insulin diabetics needed, but doctors at King's College Hospital, in London, said yesterday the man's Type 1 diabetes was cured after three transplants. The procedure, pioneered in Canada, has left the man free of hypoglycaemic episodes for the first time in 30 years. Professor Stephanie Amiel, a diabetes consultant, said more research was needed to perfect the treatment. But she added: "The implications for the future are enormous. Eventually this could end insulin dependence for all Type 1 diabetes sufferers." |

Thanks for posting Lala Mimi!! I saw this on the news last nite! Absolutely amazing!!
It just goes to show, only a hundred years ago tubercolosis was a killer disease and now it can be controlled. We live in the times when Aids, Cancer etc are incurable but generations to come will have cures for that! My FIL has diabetes (many Moroccan old people I know have diabetes)!Insha-Allah this treatment will be advanced and become readily available. |

Yeah my FIL has really advanced diabetes. Poor darling he has to watch everything he eats, takes insulin injections etc.
Many old people in Maroc seem to have it. Diet perhaps? I don't know when this diabetes treatment is going to become widely available though. Also there are still drugs to be taken to ensure that it doesn't return again. |

Excellent thread!
I heard about it today from my dad. It's really good news, Diabetes is a terrible disease to have so i'm sure it'll bring comfort to the sufferers and their families. With regards to the cancer treatment, I think the scientists are on their way to success. There are tests being carried out on 'thalidomide derived immunomodulatory drugs'. These as you have probs figured out are made from Thalidomide. The famous limb deforming drug of the 60's. Anyway these IMiDS are excellent in the treatment of multiple myeloma plus many other conditions! Could be the start of something big ![]() It's extremly interesting if you are a geek like me
