![]() by Mohammed Mohsin For the Gulf Daily News Cosmetic surgery is no longer just for Hollywood starlets. Women all over the world are having a nip here, a tuck there, to smooth out imperfections or ward off the effects of ageing. Its now possible to have the fat sucked out of your thighs and abdomen, or implants to put curves where there are none and the surgeons knife can carve out a new face. But is it worth it ? Do men find women attractive, once the surgeons work is finished? Everything in today’s world is full of chemicals and additives, including women, says 25-year-old Fayez Mohammed. As if make-up was not enough, now they insert chemicals into their bodies to enhance their looks and appearance, he said. Women should understand that if a man is interested in her just because of her appearance, then she is choosing the wrong man, said Mr. Mohammed. In any case, artificial beauty is superficial and it is more important to appreciate what lies underneath, he said. It is true, they may turn heads when they walk, outside but it is only their bodies that are doing their bidding. I don’t understand how women can feel more confident with something that is artificial. To a man, anything fake in a woman is a big turn-off. Make-up is just about acceptable to Mr. Mohammed, but only within limits. I really don’t understand how some women can go out of the house wearing foundation that looks like bad cake icing, artificial hair color, demonic eye make-up and cheeks so red, they look like slap marks, he said. This form of beauty is not just a turn off, but it is also revolting to both men and other women. Women should have the right to do whatever they want to look good, says 32-year-old Saudi businessman Abdulla Abdulwahid. If they are out of shape we complain. If their faces look bad we complain and now when they try to overcome these obstacle and look good, we are still complaining, he said. It is no secret that a woman’s looks and appearance can make her relationship with her husband a great success. Yes, character does matter, but at the end of the day if your wife starts looking like a sack of potatoes you will definitely think about getting a new one that looks like hour glass. Today’s women are lucky enough to have a variety of options available and should not shy away from using them, said Mr. Abdulwahid. Lipo-suction, silicon implants, cosmetic surgery and other accessories are all at their disposal, so I don’t see why women should sit around and allow themselves to look obsolete, compared to their younger counterparts, he said. Implants not only make a woman feel more confident about her appearance, but also makes her more desirable to the opposite sex. I think it is all about enhancing your own sex appeal and I positively believe that if men were given the same option to use implants and transform their bodies to a more athletic form, then the entire male population of the planet would look like Mr. Olympia. New technology means there should be no such thing as an unattractive woman, says Bahraini Ali Isa Abdulla, a 28-year-old overseas information technology student. Nobody can deny the fact that we are living in a very materialistic world, where everything revolves around appearances, he said. I particularly feel sorry for girls or women who have to hide or blend in among the crowd just because they have a big nose, bad skin or any other natural flaw. I think it is fantastic that women now have the choice to alter these flaws and make themselves look presentable and in some cases even stunning. Cosmetic surgery can also help redefine a woman’s character, said Mr. Abdulla. It can make a woman feel much more confident in herself and enhance her character, he said. A girl I knew in my early years at college had buckteeth, which really stuck out when she laughed, smiled or even opened her mouth and, as a result, she turned into a very anti-social character. A few months after she had corrective surgery she transformed into one of the biggest party animals on campus and even changed her major from accounting to public relations. Mr. Abdulla said he believed that most women were very self-conscious and insecure. Most women don’t venture out of the house today without applying make-up, which just shows how self-conscious they are and if it makes them feel secure, then why not? he said. Everybody has the right to make themselves look presentable and feel comfortable in society, whether it is men or women and if women need it more than men, then why not?. Bahraini software engineer Khalil Darwish is all for cosmetic surgery and make-up, but against its misuse. I don’t mind women who resort to corrective surgery for correcting deformities but what I am against is women going for extra large silicon breast implants, and excessive make-up, that makes them look like clowns, he declared. Men today prefer women who are natural and true to their looks, said Mr. Darwish. Make-up should only be used to highlight their looks, not to design a facemask that will shock on-lookers, he said. It is no wonder that the majority of women today look drop-dead gorgeous only at night, thanks to cosmetics, but you can hardly recognize them in the morning, when the magic dust has worn off. Being able to change your body on demand is a good thing, for men and women, says Abdulrahman Rashid, a 31-year-old banker. Lipo-suction, for instance, saves all the struggle of dieting. If they can make their bodies pleasing to look at by adding or subtracting mass, I think it is great, he said. Nobody likes to feel inferior and I think that the 21st century should be all about creating perfect human beings, men or women. I think it is wonderful that older women now have the chance to make themselves look better and younger by having facelifts and body lifts, which in turn helped them maintain a healthier relationship with their husbands. I for one would love to see mature older women sporting the bodies and faces of those in their 20s. But Mr. Rashid does not like women who are extremely dependent on cosmetics. Even I cant stand women who dye their hair, use tons of make up, wear contact lenses and choke you with their perfume, he said. Its one thing to hide your flaws, but overall simplicity is more appealing to men because nobody likes to see a woman with a face painted like a circus clown. ![]() |
