re: Domains
You can buy TLDs "Top Level Domains" i.e: .net .com .biz etc... for as much as $2.99 Dollars US from the likes of yahoo small business website.
However these TLDs will not have a web DNS Control Panel, most ppl that buy only domains buy them cos they have thier own DNS server. For everybody else they would have to pay for DNS control aswell as the domain name. Some companies will bundle the DNS control + the domains name, other companies will say the domain name costs say 5 Dollars and charge you 30 dollars per year for DNS control and parking, these are called extras, LOL. I've been messed up by too many hosting companies in the past so I started my own a few years ago, It was never intended to make any money, It was for me and my friends, and now I expanded the system to cater for new people, and made it so as everything that anyone would want from a hosting package is there and then some, the only thing is I decided this service would only be for people I know personally. peace out |

re: Servers
looks like Yahoo has stopped doing domains for 3 bucks it's gone up to 10, must have been a launch promo or something, but $10 is still very cheap, and that's the standard price, TLDs cost me around that price I sell em for a rounded figure of £10, the reason is here in the UK there are e-commerce costs plus VAT and taxes etc.., I charge £10 and I throw in a DNS control panel, this is for Domain names only, but to make things even more economical I chuck in hosting and round the figure to around £30 /anum, 50 Euros, for my basic account, since I already break even I'm not gonna go into details of what the accounts attributes are, and I'm not gonna bother promoting, since this is a non-profit venture, the reason I do this is to allow me freedom to do what I want with my servers, and as much space and traffic as I need for my own projects.
To start something similar all u need is a Dedicated server or co-location, actually I started with a VPS then 2nd 3rd etc..., eventualy switched to a DDS and moved everyone to the new DDS then 2nd 3rd etc.. also the key to keeping this growth is partners, every now and then I hook up with a friend or 2 then we setup a completely new venture, pretty much like a non-profit franshise, I move on and leave em to run it, this also builds an online community and friendships. Most Hosting copanies now also do reseller packages, this can be very restrictive sometimes, but for a start it's worth it. also look at vanager.com they do VPS for as little as 150 Euros/anum, u'd need extensive knowledge in system administration in Unices and windows servers, and always start small. peace out |
