Great

I had no idea that there are ppl around interested in 3D imaging and rendering, most ppl need to start some place, lots of people can't afford High end products like Maya, 3DS etc... and graphics editors like Photoshop...

Povray rendering engine come to mind (Freeware), there are tons of modelers out there also, some are freeware, The best of the bunch is for Povray is Moray it's shareware and cheap as chips.

So for artwork like that without the expense or the huge learning curve associated with Lightwave, 3DS, Maya etc..., I'd go for a Povray / Moray Combo, u can start modeling rendering in under 5 mins... that's if u're looking for stills.

For a photoshop replacement I'd go for the GIMP for touch ups.

Blender is good but it can be daunting for a beginner.
Milkshape is a great 3D modeler too (shareware).

For 3D Animations/Machinema or Games I'd recommend starting with 3DS Gmax and the Quake 3 Engine.

this is my 2 cents.

peace out

Hi Trojan, looks like you are close to this game
Yeah there is a bunch of open source free solutions as you mentioned. For someone who want's to get his feet into this 3D industry I'd suggest to download the PLE learning edition of Maya for free, it's fully operational you can make anything you want with. I just has a water mark into rendered picture.

re :PLE

Hiya;

I just could never get into Maya, I'd use it if Absolutley have to, just that I lean towards 3DS, I have more fun with scripting 3DS LOL, for beginners I think Maya would be great, a hell of a learning curve but well worth it.

I think maybe you could start a Maya series of tutorial if u feel up to it, that will be great.

Maybe we can do a full Machinema or Game series, it will be great to see how much interest this will attract.

peace out

Yeah, it needs a while to learn a 3D program. I suggested Maya because it's the only application availble for free. The others are suggesting 30 days trials and low cost editions. If you are a student you can get Maya for a very good price though.
