The court registers the marriage and issues a marriage certificate. Copies of these can be given to respective embassies for registering of marriage and in nations where spouse info is mentioned in passports these certificates help in adding the spouse name in the passport of both individuals.

If the countries law is secular then such marriage is possible and both partners can chose to belive in the faith after marriage without converting the another. Converting can be painful mentally and emotionally.

Personally i feel conversion is nothing but a mind game of increasing Numbers at theadvent of Islam b4 1400 years. Only Islam approves of it while all other religions like hinduism, christianism, buddhism,sikhism, jewish, parsis are secular to the thought of letting the Adult male and female decide wot is better. which apparently is the right choice.
Ahlam, I so agree. Freedom of choice is very important. I think by insisting a person changes to the muslim faith just so they can marry the person they love. Does not make them a good muslim, it's something that comes from the heart.
