OK, Let me be a legitimate responder to this thread first (before I go on with the other rambling):
As for the new pope, I already said I think the man is old. I would think 78 is a nice age to be retired and to enjoy the last days, months or years. But whatever makes someone happy.

I don't care much about the Vatican, except that it represents a religion of millions of people and you got to respect that.

Now this pope in particular, I don't know much about him, except his age hehehe. But I have read different responses in the media. Some nations are not happy with this choice, because they find this man to be too conservative. Others (even Muslim nations) have applauded his appointment, since he will keep the dialogue with these same Muslim nations. And wasn't JP the first pope that ever entered a Masjeed?
