Salam,
the situation in Darfur is horrendus! The government backed campaign of ethnic cleansing is one of the most disgusting examples since Chechnia.
People are being killed, maimed, taken into slavery, and displaced due to the colour of their skin and their ethnicity. Women and children raped, and men killed. Entire villages poisoned. This has been evident for more than 6 months now in the public media domain, and years before this within Human Rights organisations. However there have been no reprocussions for Sudan by the UN or even the ever powerful, and human rights aware US! Excuse me while I puke!
The stem of the issue is that the Sudanese government (who deny all allegations BTW), want to get rid of the black skinned nationals, leaving the Arab race as the dominant. Tribes such as the Fur, Zaghawa, Masellete, Tunju and many more are openly being killed by the government backed militia called the Janjaweed. These are Muslims killing Muslims.
No one (apart from Amnesty international and the UNHCR) is willing to state that anything out of the ordinary is going on. The UK for one has made NO attempts to condemn the happenings in Sudan - me thinks it may have something to do with the oil reserves in the country, and promises having been made. I don't know.
All I do know is that nothing is being done to help these people. These people are poor, helpless, uneducated farmers. All they have is their land and livestock. They hurt no one, and carry on with their lives in a peaceful manner, obiding by their religion and culture. But are being denied their right to live, but more disgustingly, they are being denied the international protection they deserve and are entitled to, as as far as the international arena is concerned, everything is hunky dory over in sudan. It's a loose/ loose situation for most of these people.
