I don't think there is anything wrong with participating in xmas. By that i mean writing card and wishing people a merry xmas. I always write cards for my non-muslim friends and so on. They always remember to wish me a happy eid and respect all the religious things i perform and even try to help me along the way so i ofcourse respect their religious occasions aswell.
As for not going to church, well there are many muslims who don't go to the jemmah on eid or any other day for that matter so we are not that different.
Personally i like xmas, people are happier and there is the possibility of snow and ofcourse there are some damn good films on tv!
mind you i find the whole idea of santa a bit creepy! a dirty old man putting kids on his lap and asking if they have been naughty!
