Explore the Beauty of Lalla Takerkoust

Situated about 40 kilometers from the city of Marrakech in Morocco, the beautiful lake of Lalla Takerkoust provides a perfect setting for leisure and is a popular destination for city-dwellers and tourists to get in touch with nature. Lalla Takerkoust is a man-made lake which was built between 1929 and 1935 for the primary purpose of providing the city of Marrakech and the surrounding areas with electricity, as well as to irrigate the agricultural fields in the plain of Haouz.

The area around Lalla Takerkoust provides many lovely trails for walking, mountain biking and horse riding. There are a number of public and private beaches alongside the lake which are used for picnicking, relaxing, socializing, swimming and sunbathing. Water sport enthusiasts can rent jet skis or kayaks to explore the lake, and for less daring visitors, pedal boats are a pleasant way to enjoy the water. Fishing, water skiing and wake-boarding are also available. Some exciting trails have been created around Lalla Takerkoust for the use of quad bikes, which is becoming a very popular activity.

The Microlight School situated on the outskirts of Marrakech offers flights over Lalla Takerkoust and the foothills of the Atlas Mountains, including authentic Berber villages and the Haouz plain. These flights can be purely as a passenger, or after some tuition, participants are given the opportunity of handling the controls. This is a novel way for visitors to get a birds-eye view of the beauty of Lalla Takerkoust and the surrounding areas.

A number of restaurants in the vicinity of Lalla Takerkoust provide visitors with a variety of food options, from French gourmet food to traditional Moroccan dishes accompanied by mint tea and with a spectacular view of the lake and the Atlas Mountains.

In the construction of Lalla Takerkoust, great care was taken to ensure that the lake would blend in with the beautiful surroundings and even enhance the area. Visitors will agree that this objective was achieved and with the majestic Atlas Mountains reflecting in the tranquil waters of the lake, Lalla Takerkoust has contributed in making this beautiful part of Morocco even more appealing.
