Gary Player Opens New Course at Golf de Mogador

Located in the beautiful historic port city of Essaouira on Morocco’s Atlantic coastline, the newly completed golf course at Golf de Mogador was recently opened with a ceremonial round of golf. As a highlight of the first Mogador Classic Tournament, the designer of the course, South African Gary Player, was one of the leading golfers to enjoy that inaugural event. At the completion of the game, Player was quoted as saying, “I am blown away by the beauty of what we have created here in Essaouira, and my greatest hope is that the course increases tourism and creates jobs for the warm and gracious people of Morocco.”

Recognition for Tourism in Morocco

Every year, the Commonwealth Business Council and the African Business Magazine host a very prestigious award ceremony, namely the African Business Awards. Many countries in Africa have been fortunate enough to have received the African Tourism Destination of the Year Award, recognizing the efforts made by them to develop the tourism industry within their respective countries. This year, in London, the efforts by the Moroccan government and tourism department were awarded with Morocco being crowed the 2009 African Tourism Destination of the Year.

A New City Growing in Morocco

As with many countries, Morocco has been working towards finding solutions for their housing problems. As the population has been increasing over the years, there has been a housing shortfall and in 2002, a new trade zone was created in anticipation of the launch of a new project named Al Boughaz. The trade zone has grown to four hundred businesses, creating approximately forty thousand job opportunities. The Al Boughaz project is the construction of a new city that will not only alleviate the housing dilemma but give hope of employment and a new life to many as well as tourism opportunities.

Marrakech International Film Festival Honors Films and Filmmakers

Widely considered to be one of the Arab World’s premier film festivals, the Marrakech International Film Festival held 14-22 November in Marrakech, Morocco, honored some of the film industry’s rising stars, as well those who have consistently promoted films and filmmaking as at an art. A nine-person panel judged fifteen films from four continents that were vying for top honors at the festival. In honor of Moroccan cinema’s 50th anniversary, the organizers shone the spotlight on local films, while at the same time giving due attention to the international films competing.

30th Africa’s Handball Champions’ Club Competition Promises Plenty of Action in Morocco

The exotic city of Casablanca in Morocco is the venue for the 30th edition of Africa’s handball champion’s club competition for male and female players. The competition runs from 24 November through to 7 December with a total of 24 teams battling for top honors. The opening match of the competition sees Rabita of Morocco pitting their skills against Gicumbi of Rwanda in group D.

New Airline Sets Up Operations In Casablanca

Low-cost carrier (LCC) Air Arabia has announced its intention to commence operations from Casablanca, Morocco, early in the new year, upon approval by the relevant authorities. Under the name of Air Arabia Maroc, the new airline will service Morocco’s domestic sector as well as operating in a number of destinations across Africa and Europe. The establishment of this new airline follows the signing of a management agreement between Air Arabia and Morocco’s leading private carrier, Regional Air Lines. The Bahrain-based investment bank, Ithmaar Bank, is the third business partner in Air Arabia Maroc.
